Repton 1

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Question: Can I play Repton 1 in windowed mode as well as full-screen mode?

Answer: Yes, the F10 key toggles between full-screen and windowed mode. The next time you load the Repton 1 game the previous setting will be retained. You can also make Repton 1 start in windowed mode the first time it is run by holding down the W key when the Superior Interactive loading screen is showing.

Repton 1 Screen Picture Question: How can I load the Cascade levels into the game?

Answer: On the Repton 1 main menu screen, click Options. Then click Load on the Options screen. On the Scenarios screen, click Cascade, then click Load near the bottom of that screen.

(The screenshot on the right shows one of the later Cascade levels. Click the image for a larger view.)

Question: How can I load the Young Repton and Junior Repton levels into the game?

Answer: Simply use the same kind of procedure as described in the previous answer. For example, to load the Young Repton levels: on the Repton 1 main menu screen, click Options; then click Load on the Options screen. On the Scenarios screen, click Young Repton, and finally click Load near the bottom of that screen.

Question: I would like to redefine the keys used for controlling Repton. How can I do that?

Answer: On the Repton 1 main menu screen, click Options. Under the heading Controls on the Options screen, click any of the key choices shown in orange, and then press the key that you would like to use. For example, to redefine the Up key, click the orange key choice (by default it is Up Arrow) shown after the word Up; now press the key that you wish to use.

Question: Can I play Repton 1 without seeing the information panel that is usually displayed on the right-hand side of the screen?

Answer: Yes, you can toggle the information panel on and off using the TAB key.

Question: What are the properties of the safes and the keys?

Answer: Collecting a key opens all of the safes on that level to reveal a diamond within each safe. There are several keys positioned on some of the levels, and it may be important to decide which key to collect - as some of the keys can cause Repton to become blocked in, for example.

Question: How can I complete the levels more quickly - without running out of time?

Answer: All of the levels can be completed with time to spare, although Repton has to work swiftly on some of the levels. A useful tip is to plan the routes by viewing the map before attempting each section of a level. Repton Time is frozen while you are viewing the map screen!

Repton 1 Screen Picture Question: I have reached Level 10 (Octopus) of the Starter levels, and the level seems to be impossible. Am I missing something obvious?

Answer: This level can be completed each time without fail. It may require some lateral thinking to work out how to solve the level - please see if you can think of the solution, but email us if you need the full explanation.

Question: Level 11 (Giant Clam) of the Starter levels has three monsters hotly pursuing Repton. How can I manage this level?

Answer: In Repton 1 it is not essential to defeat the monsters, and that is a significant factor on this level. Collect the diamonds by keeping the three monsters together as much as possible, and keeping the monsters behind Repton if you can. Use the four corners of the top section to lure the monsters towards Repton, ready to dart away when they come close.

The first person to register completion of the Repton 1 Starter levels was Frazer Middleton and he advises first checking how to complete the bottom section without fail; it is easier than the top section, but it can be disappointing to work through the tricky top section and then make a mistake in the bottom section of this level.

Question: I have designed a level using the Repton 1 Level Editor. How can I play the level in the game?

Answer: In the Level Editor, it is important to set the title of the scenario: on the File menu, click Properties, and then enter your choice of scenario name into the Title box. After you have completed your level design, on the File menu, click Save. Now start the Repton 1 game program, and load your scenario by clicking Options on the main menu screen, followed by clicking Load on the Options screen. When the Scenarios screen appears, click the title of your scenario, then click Load.
